Abstract: M. BÜHRING R. KRAUSE J. SCHILDMANN Krankenhaus Moabit Abtlg. für Naturheilkunde Freie Universität Berlin Berlin Background : Up to the 1950s important indications for a treatment with serial heliotherapy were chronic infections and proneness to infections disorders of themineral metabolism and growth disorders of the bone. Another indication were vegetative-dystonic disorders especially those causing disturbances of the circulation. For the last few years exposition to the sun has been considered to be dangerous but in our opinion the dermatological and oncological risks as an argument against the exposure to UV-radiation are emphasised in a one-sided way. Methods : Our research team has been investigating the effects of UV-exposition for several years. In different studies we have investigated the biopositive effects of UV-radiation in healthy persons patients who are prone to infections (e.g. children women suffering from chronic vaginal candidiasis and geriatric patients) patients suffering from renal osteopathy and osteoporosis and also patients after myocardial infarction or persons with hypertension. Results : Preliminary results after serial exposure to a spectrum of UVA and UVB indicate that heliotherapy might improve the immunological defense in patients with chronic respiratory infections and in women with chronic vaginal candidiasis. We have also regularly observed an improvement of cell-mediated immunological defense. In patients with disorders of the bone metabolism heliotherapy stopped the process of osteopenia compared to the untreated control group. In healthy patients as well as in patients suffering from coronary artery disease parameters of the circulation changed as one would expect it after physical training. We could also show that compared to the untreated control group heliotherapy significantly lowers the blood pressure in patients with hypertension. Conclusion : The results of several studies indicate that heliotherapy might be a treatment option for patients suffering from chronic infections disorders of mineral metabolism and circulatory disturbance. Further studies are necessary to support the preliminary results. wt
