Kohlenhydratintoleranzen als Ursache unspezifischer Abdominalbeschwerden |
Author(s):
, ,Abstract: Intolerance of sugar or sugar alcohols is one of the most frequent causes of unclear abdominal complaints. In Germany alone, 15-22% of the population suffers from lactose intolerance. Intolerance of fructose or sorbite are less unknown, but occur very often too. A reliable proof of carbohydrate intolerance is possible via analyses of hydrogen in the respiratory gases. This is a simple, noninvasive procedure, which is clearly superior to other procedures with regard to error rate, handling and strain on the patients. When the test is used correctly, wrong negative or wrong positive results ar very rare. Normally, analyses of hydrogen in the respiratory gases are used in hospitals with gastroenterologic departments. In order to spare the patients long journeys or even treatment in a hospital, a test variant has been developed at the Institute for Microbiology and Biochemistry in Herborn, which makes it possible even at home. Following an oral administration of sugar, sample tubes are filled with respiratory air with the help of sampling instruments and an enclosed instruction and are sent for further analysis to Herborn. lf a carbohydrate intolerance is present, therapeutic proposals with dietetic recommendations are sent out.
