Pharmacokinetic investigation in humans of an aqueous dry extract from senna pods

Abstract: Therapeutic doses of an aqueous taxative (Bekunis® Instant Tee) containing dry extract from senna pods were administered to twelve persons over four days. Blood samples were token up to 96 hours after the first application and the plasma levels of aloe emodin and rhein were determined with a sensitive fluorometric HPLC method (determination limit. 1 ng aloe emodin and 2ng rhein per ml plasma). At no time aloe emodin was detected in the plasma of the test persons. The rhein plasma concentration reached maximal values one hour and at eight hours after administration of the test medication. No accumulation was observed.
