Abstract: Vitality as functionality and subjective state of health in accordance with one´s age, is the target parameter of an interdisciplinary diagnostic concept centered around objectivation of and measurable influence on an individual´quality of life in its second half. Suitable examination methods to determine vitality and the relevant Functional Age Index presuppose an understanding of functional vitality as reflected by its various layers of physical, mental/ emontional and psychosocial phenomena. Scientific approaches to such examination methods are being developed in Japan, USA, Australia, Finland and Germany. The authors present and describe an innovative gerontological functional measurement unit suitable for both research and practice purposes and outline its applications, concentraiting in particular on the aspects prevention and rehabilitation in the second half of life.
