The individual patient and clinical validity in research

Abstract: A combination of rigor and imagination is necessary to meet the challenges of health care. Within the total repertoire of medicine, it is necessary to have different approaches to understanding the world. This pluralist position offers an acceptance of orthodox clinical trials together with a promotion of new understandings and methods. In this way, differing studies inform each other. It is not a retreat to old methods, but the development of what is new, including new ideas in statistics. Our intellectual endeavours should be astute enough to see that science can accommodate multiple viewpoints and thereby develop a wide range of therapeutic possibilities.
