Is the therapy with herbal remedies endangered?

Abstract: The status of herbal remedies has been confirmed by the successful work of the comity on herbal remedies (Commission E) and by the monographs published by the Federal Health Office in collaboration with this expert comity. Herbal remedies with proven quality, safety and efficacy will continue to be available for therapy. Even for the group of herbal remedies which are not only sold in pharmacies but also in health food stores, a suitable way of declaration of indications was found. Considering these facts, there is no reason to fear »the death of Phytotherapy« due to inadequate requirements in marketing authorization. This favourable assessment of the situation has however to be changed if there will be no sufficient requirements for quality, safety or prove of efficacy guiding to a simple registration of phytopharmaceuticals only as traditional remedies. This concept would lead in short time to disappearance of herbal remedies in therapy.
