Abstract: A strong need exists in music therapy settings for standardized assessments with valid, population-specific norms. The lack of such instruments hinders documentation of differential treatment and treatment outcome. This article presents initial normative data for the use of the Self-Monitoring Scale (SMS) for music therapists working with chemically dependent adolescents. A previous article (James, 1986b) reviewed the conceptual use of this social psychological instrument and documented initial norms for adults with chemical dependency. The current study included client ages 13-17 with chemical dependency (N=152). Reliability estimates indicate that the SMS presents consistent results for this population. Significant differences were found between this sample's mean score and those previously reported for college students and adults with chemical dependency. The implications of these results are discussed with respect to suggestions for future research.
