Music therapy values clarification: A positive influence on perceived locus of control |
Journal/Book: Journal of Music Therapy. 1988; 25: 206-215.
Abstract: Conducted 2 studies using 60 adolescent participants currently receiving rehabilitation services for chemical dependency. Ss in the experimental groups attended 4 1-hr music therapy discussion groups, which were structured in accordance with the Values Clarification approach of S. B. Simon et al (1978). Control group Ss were provided alternate activities. Results of both studies indicate that song lyric analysis activities positively influenced the Ss' perceived locus of control. Evidence suggests that the use of music therapy activities focusing on values clarification will allow adolescent clients to develop a positive, healthy attitude toward themselves and their recovery from chemical dependency.
