Abstract: Contends that because of the many controversies prevalent in the field of alcohol rehabilitation, it is difficult for music therapists to begin working with this population. Therefore, the author reviews music therapy service for individuals with alcoholism. The clinical syndrome is described, and typologies and diagnostic criteria are discussed, including current standards for diagnosis. An overview of the current theoretical and empirical research in the alcoholism literature is presented. It is concluded that treatment must be based on a comprehensive assessment to determine what genetic, psychological, and environmental factors are supporting the individual's behavior.
