Abstract: This paper discusses the four main objectives of music therapy assessment; 1) Diagnostic. 2) Receptive. 3) Descriptive. 4) Prescriptive, and suggests the following criteria for evaluating the effectiveness of a music therapy assessment. 1) Objectives are clearly defined and accomplishable. 2) The therapist is qualified to perform the assessment, both musically and clinically. 3) The assessment falls within the purview of music therapy. 4) The method of assessment is appropriate to the objectives adopted. 5) The data are reliable samples of the clients responses. 6) The interpretations are valid. 7) The assessment process has been ethical in every way.
