Abstract: The tuning of keyboard instruments - and of other instruments with fixed pitch, such as lyre and harp - is of supreme importance as a prerequisite of musical performance. The practical question of "how to tune" can however hardly be answered without reference to "What to tune" and, in view of today's fresh interest in unequal temperament, "why to tune" in a particular way. the author presents a survey of the development of our Western note systems, indicates various ways of solving the tuning problem and presents simple tuning methods and techniques.
