Abstract: Discusses dance as a form of social communication, and traces the psychological functions of dance throughout history. Dance has always encompassed both a frenzied dance of solidarity (Dionysian) and the more equilibrated dance of Apollo. Currently, these dance functions are exemplified by the ballet and rock music dancing. The dancing manias of the middle ages are described briefly. (English abstract) (5 ref)
