Abstract: Experiments on the DNA-metabolism in periphera blood lymphocytes and on natural kille4 cell activity were carried out in connection with spa-therapy in the thermal gallery of Böckstein - Badgastein. To differentiate between effects of heat from that of ionizing radiation comparable experiments were done in the Finnish bath. Hyperthermia was found to influence DNA-metabolism as well as the number and activity of natural killer cells. However the results of our investigations in the thermal gallery suggest additional effects of 222Rn and its dughters. Saunists war found to have a significantly higher number of large granular lymphocytes than non-saunists. Moreover in our saunists an increase of the killer cell activity in the presence of interleukin-2 and interferon could be demonstrated after exposure to the Finnishbath. A significantly decreased natural killer cell activity was found in patients with ankylosing spondylitis. After spa therapy in the thermal gallery a normalization to control values could be observed. No significant differences in the natural killer cell activity could be demonstrated comparing inhabitants of Innsbruck with those of Gastein.
