Abstract: Two normally hearing male children exhibiting delayed language and developmental apraxia served as their own controls while receiving 2 mo of traditional language and speech therapy followed by melodic intonation therapy (MIT) as a verbal systemic warm-up. The language sampling techniques (R. Gottsleben and D. Tyack, 1974) and the Porch Index of Communicative Ability in Children tests were used to measure pre- and posttest gains in word-morpheme usage, 5 types of verbal tasks, auditory comprehension, and articulation skills. Significant gains were found in phrase length, noun retrieval, and verbal imitation tasks. Results are compared to documented findings of aphasic adults receiving MIT, and alterations of the adult format to benefit children are discussed. (9 ref)
