Structure Parallels between Music Therapy and Play Therapy

Abstract: The concepts of "play" in the models of music therapy and play therapy are studied. In play therapy the exploratory free play is of importance in both the observation-orientated analytical as well as in the relationship-orientated humanistic models. Regulated playing according to the rules however is dominant in the socializing structures of most music therapeutic systems. This may be due to the fact that play therapy is applied mostly individually and music therapy more frequently in groups. A genuine combination of the very ancient tradition of healing through music, dance and enactment and the therapeutic principles of exploratory free playing seems to prevail in the Expressive Therapies or Artistic Therapy techniques.
