SOME BIOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF THE DIGESTIVE FLORA |
Journal/Book: Reprinted from The American Journal of the Medical Sciences Vol. 244 No. 3 1962. 1962;
Abstract: THE ROCKEFELLER INSTITUTE NEW YORK NEW YORK *Read at the meeting of the Association of American Physicians at Atlantic City May 1 1962. THE findings that we wish to report here cannot help evoking memories of a quaint bygone scientific era. They call to mind Metchnikoffs assertions half a century ago that most ills of old age arise; from intestinal intoxication and that lactobacilli play a useful role in man and animals by antagonizing the noxious components of the intestinal flora. Today Metchnikoffs imaginings are of interest only to a few historians pediatricians health cranks and manufacturers of yoghurt and acidophilus milk. Yet one could quote in their defense some observations which have recently come to light particularly in the field of animal husbandry. For lack of time however we shall have to limit ourselves to a brief account of 4 years' Personal experience with a new colony of mice (NCS ) in which lactobacilli constitute by far the largest percentage of the fecal population. . . .
