A NEW ACID-BASE NOMOGRAM AN IMPROVED METHOD FOR THE CALCULATION OF THE RELEVANT BLOOD ACID-BASE DATA

SUMMARY A nomogram for the calculation of all relevant acid-base values of the blood is presented. The nomogram uses a pH/log pCO2 coo-ordinate system as the relation between pH and log pCO2 is approximately rectilinear. Two curves in this coordinate system (the buffer base curve and the base excess curve) permits direct reading of the contents of buffer base and base excess of a blood sample when its pH/log pCO2 line is determined. The nomogram is particularly suitable for calculation of the remaining acid-base factors (i. e. pCO2 base excess and also buffer base or standard bicarbonate) after measurements of the actual pH and pH after equilibration with CO2 at two known tensions or at one tension when the hemoglobin concentration is known. ___MH
