A MICRO METHOD FOR DETERMINATION OF pH CARBON DIOXIDE TENSION BASE EXCESS AND STANDARDBICARBONATE IN CAPILLARY BLOOD

Abstract: From the Department of Clinical Chemistry Rigshospitalet Copenhagen Denmark Received for publication October 31 1959 SUMMARY A micro method suitable for capillary blood is described for determining pH pCO2 standard bicarbonate and base excess of blood. The method requires measurement of actual pH and pH after equilibration with carbon dioxide of known tension. For this purpose a new micro equipment has been developed involving a capillary glass electrode (for 25 µl samples) and a device for equilibration of micro quantities of blood (30 -50 µl) with gases. Capillary tubes prepared with heparinfluoride and provided with a stirrer to be operated by a small magnet are described for sampling blood anaerobically. Normal values for capillary blood have been found. Simultaneous determinations an arterial blood gave only small differences. ___MH
