Abstract: Lesions of the intestinal lining play a crucial role in illnesses such as idiopathic inflammatory bowel diseases (Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis), inflammatory bowel due to treatments with antibiotics, cytostatic agents or radiation as well as allergies in which an impaired intestinal mucosal barrier plays a pathogenic role. Through stabilisation of the intestinal mucous membrane and restoration of a physiologic intestinal ecology it is possible to alleviate or cure these diseases.Mucosal damage of the gut also plays an important role in the pathogenesis of functional intestinal diseases. The relevance of mucosal lesions in established disease is controversial though. In a recent pharmacovigilance study 94% of the patients with irregular defacation improved due to treatment with an E. coli extract. The excellent tolerability of this biological therapy is particularly important in the pediatric patients evaluated in this study.
