Abstract: * Institut für Medizinische Klimatologie Universität Kiel ** Median Klinik Heiligendamm HEILIGENDAMM Atopic dermatitis is an important indication for treatment in the seaside climate. UV-radiation bathing in the seawater cooling by the wind and relief from psychological and social stress are important factors which help to relieve the symptoms of the patient. In a multicenter trial 667 patients were treated in four rehabilitation-hospitals at the coast of the North Sea and Baltic Sea in order to find out which therapeutic concepts were administered to which patients and what the therapeutic outome depended upon. The activity of the disease was measured by the EASI-Score introduced by Costa. 93 % of the patient improved the EASI-Score of all patients improved by more than 50 %. In a second multcenter trial which is still running the patients are randomised wheather they are treated only by means of thalassotherapy or additionaly by specific drugs like tar tannin polidocanol befexemac urea (more than 5 %). In the second trial there is a follow up for more than one year to determine the long term effect of the treatment. The effect is similar to the one in the first study. One year after the treatment a considerable effect is still measurable. There is no difference between the two randomised groups : patients recieving only thalassotherapy benefited as much as patients who were additionaly treated by specific drugs. wt
