Dreams and hallucinations: the narcoleptic model

Journal/Book: Evol Psychiatr. 2000; 65: 23 Rue Linois, 75724 Paris Cedex 15, France. Editions Scientifiques Medicales Elsevier. 341-352.

Abstract: In 1846, Baillarger described psyche-sensory hallucinations during sleep onset and waking hours. Two years later, Maury coined the terms hypnagogic and hypnapompic hallucinations for these phenomenon. In 1880, Gelineau used the french word 'narcolepsie' to describe patients with short sleep episodes and spells of weakness triggered by emotion. In 1957, Yoss and Daly included hypnagogic and hypnapompic hallucinations in the 'narcolepsy tetrad'. Since, things are more and more complex : these hallucinations may happen in normal subjects. REM intrusion into wakefulness, are probably responsible of hypnagogic and hypnapompic hallucinations in narcoleptics patients. Treatment-resistant schizophrenia may be confused with narcolepsy. Symptoms of schizophrenia were fond to be significantly more frequent among narcolepsy patients. We would like, through these questions, to go from dreams to hallucinations.
