Wege zum Miteinander reden |
Abstract: In the surroundings of hardly any other disease it is possible to observe such a speechlessness than it is the case with tumor diseases. The diagnosis "cancer" hits most people unexpectedly; fears emerge, body and soul loose their balance. Unsureness and helplessness in the face of burdening therapies and permanent handicaps, taboos concerning pain and limited lifetime sets limits to communication. Speechlessness can lead to feelings of helplessness and to an inability to act, misunderstandings can cause an estrangement between the members of a family, so that dealing with each other can suddenly become very difficult. Experience however shows, that there are many opportunities to prevent speechlessness or to resolve already existing conversation barriers. With several examples it can be shown, how it is possible to cope with even difficult situations and problems by talking with each other. Physicians and nurses, family members and the ill person herself/himself can support each other, to understand each other and not to allow, that the flow of communication is interrupted. To communicate worries and fear, to clarify uncertainties, to resolve conflicts in an open interchange strengthens a trusting relationship, which helps people suffering from cancer to participate in life. A successful communication is an important precondition, to accept the disease, to feel accepted in one's disease and to find ways, to cope with the disease.
