Abstract: Fungi and lichen often receive hardly any attention, but they are very important for the biosphere, because they break down organic waste materials (fungi: Mycophyta) and develop habitats, which have not been used so far (lichen: Lichenes). Both groups of organisms provide economically important raw materials, valuable food and drugs (Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Claviceps purpurea, Cetraria islandica). Among them, there are also organisms, which form extremely toxic peptides (Amanita phalloides).
