Lumbar Supports and education for prevention of occupational LBP

Abstract: van Poppel M. N. M. et al.: Lumbar Supports and education for the prevention of low back pain in industry: a randomized controlled trial. JAMA 279 (1998) 1789 -1794 Low back pain (LBP) is a frequent occupational-related injury and cause of loss of time from work. Despite a variety of lumbar supports in use and educational programs designed to teach proper lifting techniques the efficacy of these appoaches is not well demonstrated. This study sought to further evaluate three interventions. A total of 312 workers in a cargo department at an Airline in the Netherlands were randomized to one of four groups. These groups were designated to receive education lumbar supports a combination of education and lumbar support or no intervention. The educational program consisted to three group sessions an lifting techniques for a total duration of five hours. The lumbar support group used a "Work Sport" back support. Individuals were advised to use it during working hours over a period of six months. Major outcome measures included the incidence of LBP and lost work time during the six month intervention. Of the patients assigned lumbar support 43 % used the device at least half of the time. A total of 282 subjects completed the trial.
