Devil's Claw (Harpagophytum procumbens)

Abstract: Devil's Clow (Horpagophytum procumbens) is recommended by the Commission E and ESCOP monographs for the adjuvant treatment of degenerative rheumatism or painful arthrosis and tendinitis as well as for loss of appetite and dyspeptic complaints. An improvement of mobility and a reduction of pain sensation was observed in more than 15 clinical studies with differential methodological design with crude drug, tee and extracts of the secondary tubers of Devil's Clow. Pharmacological experiments have shown analgesic, antiphlogistic and antiinflammatory actions. The antidyspeptic effect may be due to the drug's bitterness in the form of a decoction. The important constituents are iridoid glycosides, which mainly contribute to the observed effects. However, the entire extract has to be considered an active ingredient.
