Local church support to individuals with developmental disabilities

Abstract: Support provided by local churches to individuals with disabilities was studied through a mail survey. Results indicated that 56 of 69 of churches surveyed (81%) were attended by individuals with developmental disabilities. Additionally, support was being provided by respondent churches in the form of food, transportation, opportunities for service to the church and the community, and social/emotional support among others. Recommendations are made for further study into developing the potential of the local church as an existing resource for supporting individuals with developmental disabilities in the community.
