Speleotherapeutic Radon Treatment in Ankylosing Spondylitis

Abstract: Objective: About 2,800 patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) present annually for treatment at the Gasteiner Heilstollen. The clinical efficacy of the treatment was evaluated in four trials. Is there objective evidence of positive effects of the treatment? Methods:(1) In AS patients the variables of mobility were measured before and after the cure treatment (n = 140). (2) Lung function testing was carried out in 100 AS patients with severe disease (thoracic excursion <3 cm) before and after the treatment. (3) Fifty-two patients who came to Gastein for their (at least) 6th cure treatment were questioned about their individual experiences with previous therapies at the Heilstollen. (4) By means of a mailed questionnaire the effects of the treatment at the Heilstollen were compared with the effects of an established clinical rehabilitation program (n = 50). Results: (1) In severe AS cervical mobility improved after the treatment, whereas lumbar and thoracic mobility did not change significantly. (2) 'Me lung function testing did not reveal significant changes. (3) The patients' answers gave evidence that a treatment at the Heilstollen can also be successfully applied in acute states of the disease. In the majority of cases the maximum relief of symptoms was felt one or two months after the end of treatment, and then lasted for about six to nine months. (4) In the retrospective assessment by the patients almost all tested variables showed significantly better results after the treatment at the Heilstollen compared to the established clinical rehabilitation program. Conclusion: 'Me present data confirm the clinical experience that the treatment at the Gasteiner Heilstollen can be highly recommended in AS. Improved mobility and pain relief allow a better performance of daily life activities after the treatment.
