,Abstract: Wholesome Nutrition is a diet with which international recommendations for the reduction of the risk of nutrition-related diseases are consistently translated. In the Giessen Wholesome Nutrition Study the longterm effects of this diet on the nutritional and health status of healthy women were studied. With a favorable food choice and preference of food items of plant origin women practising Wholesome Nutrition show a high intake especially of those nutrients which are provided by plant food. Except the proportion of carbohydrate and fat, vitamin B,2 and D, the intake of all nutrients studied is above the recommended dietary allowances of the German Nutrition Society (DGE). In most aspects the nutrient intake is more favorable than for a comparable group of women eating an average mixed diet. Those women who practise Wholesome Nutrition and include small amounts of meat in their diet, use the advantages of a predominately vegetarian diet, but avoid its potential weaknesses. In addition to health aspects ecological and social reasons are also motivation to practise Wholesome Nutrition.
