Zink und Morbus Alzheimer

Abstract: A reduction of the cerebral glucose utilization is a leading symptom with the dementia of the Alzheimer type. It also means a loss of activity of glycolytic enzymes. Zinc metalloenzymes are some of the key enzymes of glycolysis. In some patients with dementia of the Alzheimer type reduced zinc levels in serum were found. An impaired utilization of glucose can be improved in old age by the administration of zinc. For therapeutic zinc doses an effect is known, which improves motivation and mood. Cerebral glucose reaction rates can be measured with the positron emission tomography.
