Retrospective survey of patients of practitioners of traditional Chinese acupuncture in the UK |
Author(s):
Abstract: A retrospective on-site survey of the case notes of patients of practitioners of traditional Chinese acupuncture was used to identify basic demographic information. A total of 714 patients were identified as having received treatment during a 6-week period. The results suggest that acupuncturists treat approximately twice as many women as men nationally and that one third of all patients are women between 30 and 49 years of age. The commonest presenting conditions are musculoskeletal, neurological and emotional disorders, but a wide range of disorders are treated, the majority of which are long-standing and chronic. The duration of symptoms before treatment, the number of treatments, and the period of time over which treatment is given, all have a wide range. A limiting factor of this study was variable record-keeping by practitioners.
