Abstract: Modern psychosomatic medicine claims that not only the causal approach but also finalistic as well as phenomenological considerations are necassary for understanding the psyche and its psychosomatic interplay. The acupuncture teaching of the "five elements"implies specific psychological correlations. The 3 vertical meridian-axis (dorsal, lateral, and ventral), if interpreted phenomenologically, lead to basic aspects in the psychosomatic make-up of the human being. These basic aspects of the 3 meridian-axis are rather identical with the 3 categories of subjective pain experience on which modern pain-psychotherapy is based. In this way, acupuncture form the somatopsychological lind as the meridians, via their acupoints, are accessible on the somatich level.
