Lullabies are "transferential transitional songs": Further considerations on resistance in music therapy |
Journal/Book: Arts in Psychotherapy. 1995; 22: 353-357.
Abstract: Responds to D. S. Austin and J. M. Dvorkin's (see PA, Vol 81:26823) article, focusing on further psychoanalytic implications of the case of a 41-yr-old female patient's resistance as a result of the uncovering of a hidden lullaby. The paper introduces the term "transferential transitional music" to integrate 2 interrelated psychoanalytic theories: patient's songs are transferential music (J. B. Rosenbaum, 1963), and lullabies are transitional tunes (M. McDonald, 1990). The term is also applied to a lullaby by Robert Schumann.
