Unconvential therapy of lung cancer.

Abstract: Unproven, unconventional or alternative methods are used increasingly inincurable diseases with limited therapeutic possibilities. This isdefinitely true for lung cancer, especially the non-small-cell types.These methods are often connected with equally unproven theories oftumorigenesis and doubtful diagnostic tests. Selected unproven methodsrecommended for the treatment of lung cancer are discussed. There is nodiet against lung cancer, but there are promising results of tertiaryprevention with vitamin A. The definitive proof of effective adjuvanttreatment with mistletoe preparations is still lacking. Iscador as wellas the 'immunmodulator' Polyerga had no activity compared to placebo inadvanced non-small-cell lung cancer. Also for various other alleged'biologic response modifiers' (Ney-Tumorin, Factor AF 2, ATC of Klehr,AHIT of Kief) clinical efficacy has not been proven so far. The greatestrisk of these methods is to miss the often singular chance of long-timeremission or cure, i.e. by radical surgery. Proven harmless methods maybe tolerated as additive supportive therapy.
