Viscum album L.: Individuelle Immunreaktionen und spezifische zytostatische Effekte - Konsequenzen für die konventionelle zytostatische Therapie?

Abstract: As each patient's immune system is dysfunctional in its own way, individual immune responses are hardly to calculate. Here, we present selected but representative immune responses towards Viscum album L. (VAL). In most cancer patients treated with these drugs, an increased amount of activated T cells with interleukin-2 receptor expression was observed. However, the number of CD8 + T cells decreased, whereas the relative amount of CD57+CD8+ T suppressor/ NK cells raised. The cytostatic effects of mistletoes were found to be host tree specific but also to be sex specific. A general effect of VAL seems to be a stabilization of the DNA. The antimutagenic effects of VAL extracts might be of therapeutical benefit during or after conventional chemotherapy.
