Pharmaceutical aspects of herbal bile remedies

Abstract: In spite of controversial scientific discussion herbal bile remedies take a high rank in medicine, especially in the practice of the general physician. The great importance of herbal bile remedies for the medical prescription, but also for selfmedication is reflected by the considerable number of drug preparations available on the market. The commission E has passed 26 positive bile-drug monographs and 7 fixed combinations. Additionally there are 9 drugs and 2 bile tea-mixtures in the form of standard admissions. The examples of Cynarae folium, Curcumae xanthorrhiza rhizoma, Curcumae longae rhizoma and Chelidonii herba point out concrete problems involved in the preparation of phytomedicines with reproducable efficacy. This report suggests analytical methods for the determination of value-determinating constituents and their adjustment and standardisation. Further requirements for the preparation of high-quality phytomedicines are discussed.
