Abstract: Object: It was investigated to which degree different power intensities of the physiotherapeutic means of ultrasound can be differentiated. With regard to practice related dosage of ultrasound, adequate intensities must be founded an therapeutic physiology.Subjects: Local blood flow was measured as a criterion of differentiation using laser-Doppler spectroscopy as a measuring method including blood flow in deeper tissue layers as well.Design: In the region of forearm muscles, ultrasonic power intensities of 0.0 (placebo), 0.3, 0.6, 0.7, 0.8, 0.9 and 1.0 W/cm2 were applied in random order in blind test an eight test persons. Values of local blood flow were always taken prior to and following application. Results: A significant threshold value for the stimulation of local blood flow was found at 0.7 W/cm2. Generally, a non-linear relation was found between power intensity and changes in blood flow. Conclusions: Steps of ultrasonic power intensity can be differentiated from local blood flow using Laser-Doppler spectroscopy. In practical use the obvious difference between 0.6 and 0.99 W/cm2 must be observed.
