Journal/Book: Journal of Child and Adolescent Group Therapy. 1993; 3: 25-39.
Abstract: Describes a group therapy approach with 6 sexually abused girls (aged 5-8 yrs) who were having problems relating to peers and adults at school and at home. The goal of the group was to modify specific maladaptive behaviors resulting from sexual abuse by focusing on relationship issues in the group while resolving the sexual abuse issues. Two therapists led an open-ended long-term group for 1.5 yrs that followed the stages of forming, norming, storming, conforming, and termination. The therapists used a systems theory approach as well as techniques of reframing, interpretation, constant reinforcement, education, cognitive restructuring, role play, and art therapy. All of the children benefited from the group and met their behavioral goals as reported by therapists, caretakers, and teachers.
