Music and pattern change in chronic pain |
Journal/Book: Advances in Nursing Science. 1993; 15: 27-36.
Abstract: Investigated the use of music as a unitary-transformative means of altering the perception of chronic pain among women with rheumatoid arthritis within the context of M. A. Newman's (1986) model of health as expanding consciousness. 30 women (aged 31-81 yrs) diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis for a minimum of 6 mo responded to the McGill Pain Questionnaire prior to listening to music of their choice, during music, and 1 to 2 hrs after completing the intervention. Data were analyzed according to the Number of Words Chosen and the Pain Rating Intensity--Rank of the McGill Pain Questionnaire. Results support the use of music as a unitary-transformative intervention.
