Abstract: Music therapy has been applied and studied since B.C. 500. Research findings supported this treatment. The purpose of the project is to examine the effects of group music therapy on improving psychotic symptoms and personal interactions of psychotic patients and improving job satisfaction of nursing staff in a general hospital. One-group pre-experimental research design was conducted. A sample of 40 patients was selected in 4 different time periods, based on patients admission dates, from November 1990 to April 1991. Subjects in each treatment period participate in ten-hour group music activities which were provided by one of five trained nursing therapists, 3 times a week for 2 weeks. The treatment activities included music listening, experience sharing, and group discussion. Pre and post self-report assessment measures were used. The measures were psychotic symptoms and personal interaction questionnaires and nursing staff satisfaction scale. Statistics techniques, such as chi square and paired t test were used. Findings showed the effects of group music therapy not only on improving withdrawn and anxious behaviors and enhancing personal interactions, but also on keeping satisfaction of nursing staff. The most significant contribution of the study is to provide better care and improve nursing staff morale. The research outcomes supported the value of music therapy on clinical application. (17 ref)
