Working with psychotic processes in art therapy |
Journal/Book: Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy. 1993; 7: 25-38.
Abstract: Describes the practice of art therapy with patients in acute psychotic states. The approach used by the author is informed by ideas offered by psychoanalysis and analytical psychology, particularly through the work of W. R. Bion (1962, 1970) and M. Eigen (1985). Illustrations of signs of schizophrenic regression and meaninglessness in the work of patients are offered. It is suggested that when the patient acknowledges the relationship between him/herself and the therapist, the therapist is allowed to exist without the mobilization of psychotic defenses. Therapeutic relationships then become a possibility. Case studies are cited.
