Abstract: Defines external structure in music therapy and describes its purposes and functions. From a clinical standpoint, external structure includes those aspects of the environment, including the music, that are controlled by the therapist. Six aspects of structure are outlined: time, space/equipment, choices, materials, instructions, and activities. Each component is divided into maximum, moderate, and minimum levels, and therapist interventions at each level are presented.
