Abstract: Investigated music therapy with positive suggestion on patients' self-reported pain, blood pressure, and heart rate after coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. The random sample consisted of 20 experimental and 20 control, complication-free postoperative CABG patients. The experimental group received positive suggestion, then participated in two 30-minute sessions of self-selected music therapy. Heart rate and blood pressure were obtained one minute before each session, 15 minutes into therapy, and immediately after cessation of music. A visual analogue scale (VAS) was used to measure pain immediately before and after the 30-minute sessions. Blood pressure, pulse, and VAS were obtained similarly for the control group. CABG patients had a significant reduction in self-reported pain and systolic blood pressure following music therapy and positive suggestion. (author)
