Bereavement in Childhood - Music Therapy Intervention |
Abstract: The paper examines the role of music therapy in a case concerning the bereavement of an eight year old boy. His development is compounded by his condition; cerebral palsy and poor vision. Non-directive music therapy builds on the boy's innate rhythmic awareness, selective preference of timbre and his considerable energy in the music. Music Therapy meets the strong expressive need of the boy and provides a medium for powerful cathartic musical expressions of excitment, grief and anger, inseparably fused together. The sessions show how music therapy provides a means towards the boy's acceptance of his complex emotional difficulties. This paper can be purchased from the BSMT late l992, price on application.
