Suicidal behaviour 2: the results of applying an ecosystemic research paradigm

Abstract: Suicidal behaviour is seen as an attempt to maintain systemic coherence. Any preventive strategies will need to address the Problem of distress management within an ecosystemic paradigm which considers the individual, the family and the community. The results question the validity of treating individual distress with interventions which focus on the individual alone, when that distress is clearly located in a context Of relational difficulty. Instead of seeing escalating distress as personal failure and blaming the patient, which leads to the Situation of mutual negation, we may be better advised as clinicians to search for what systemic coherence the behaviour is attempting to maintain at the cost of the individual's or familys life.
