Abstract: The prophylactic effects of omega-3 fatty acids on cardiovascular diseases can by now be considered proven through many studies. Recent studies also use the antiinflammatory effects of the omega-3 fatty acids for new therapeutical methods. Since the middle of the 1980s studies with over 350 patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis whose symptoms improved considerably under the administration of fish oil have been published. Lipoxygenase plays the central role for these effects.
