Abstract: The prophylactic effects of omega-3 fatty acids an cardiovascular diseases can by now be considered proven through many studies. Newer studies also use the anti-inflammatory effects of the omega-3 fatty acids for new therapeutical methods. Since the middle of the 1980s studies with over 350 patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis whose symptoms improved considerably under the administration of fish oil have been published. Lipoxygenase plays the central role for these effects.Fourteen studies have by now been carried through an the therapy of psoriasis with high-dosage omega-3 fatty acids additional to the standard therapy. A significant improvement of the erythema and the pruritus could thus be achieved.
