Abstract: Objective: To a patient with rheumatoid arthritis preserving the basic motorial qualities means an essential component in the course of therapy. Therefore, possibilities to influence the fitness should be analysed in a comparative way.Subjects: Comprehensive supplies in the scope of therapy are examined with regard to their possibilities for patients with rheumatoid arthritis.Design: 46 patients with rheumatoid arthritis took part in a sports program over a period of 6 months. The efficiency of the program was recorded by staying-power and strength tests as well as by the MOPO (measurement of patient outcome).Results: Signific improvements were achieved regarding staying-power and strength (hand strength and leg strength). Likewise concerning the psycho-social patient outcome statistically probable variations could be made out. In respect to the physical health there were no subjective modifications registered.Conclusions: Well-aimed steps in the scope of sports therapy can be a meaningful contribution to the treatment of patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Beside the motorial improvements particularly the influence an the psychical aspects of the process of an illness stands out.
