Effects of Chinese Medicine on Haemagglutination and Adhesion of Uropathogenic Escherichia Coli to Uroepithelial Cells |

Abstract: Twenty-nine Chinese drugs which are Most commonly used in the treatment of Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) were studiet to investigate their effects on Uropathogenic Escherichia Coli (UPEC). Inhibition test of UPEC, haemagglutination test, adhesion test and direct observation of UPEC P fimbriae under electron microscope were carried out. The results showed that none of the drugs had either bacteriostatic and bactericidal effects or receptors analogous to P fimbriae of UPEC. We found that eight of them, such as Herbapolygoni avicularis, could inhibit haemagglutination and adherence of P-fimbriated UPEC through restraining the expression of P fimbriae. We therefore suggest that the inhibition effect of attachment of UPEC to uroepithelial cells may be the Most important mechanism of these eight herbs in the treatment of UTI caused by P-fimbriated UPEC. It supports a new way of studying these kinds of drugs and seeking more effective treatments.
