Abstract: A prospective open therapy comparison study was carried through to compare haematogenous oxidation therapy (HOT) and oral administration of pentoxifillin. 38 patients suffering from arterial occlusive disease in stage l1 b, according to Fontaine, took part in the study. The patients were randomly chosen for one of the two types of treatment. The primary comparative aim was an increase of the pain-free walking range by 50%. With HOT the pain-free walking range could be increased by 124%, with pentoxifillin by 48%. Plasma viscosity was decreased to the normal range by 8% with HOT - with pentoxifillin no change could be registered. For a final proof of the clinical efficiency of HOT further placebo controlled double-blind studies are suggested.
