Abstract: Alchemilla xanthochlora Rothm. (Ladies Mantle) has been recommended for medicinal use since the middle ages. According to the signature theory it was used for womens diseases. This indication has been maintained until today in folk medicine. The most important use of the drug in the Middle ages was as an wound remedy. The main constituents of Alchemilla xanth. are tannins, triterpenes, pseudosaponins and saponins. Potential effective constituents until now have been identified only in the tannin-fraction. Aqueous and aqueous-methanolic extracts have shown to have antibacterial and antimutagenic effects. Concerning the efficacy of the drug only a few clinical studies have been performed. They suggest an antihemorrhagic and angioprotective effect.
